Né en Israël (1951), Daniel Erban arrive tout jeune au Canada et amorce son travail artistique dès le début des années 70. Servi par un geste net et incisif, une touche brutale et directe, ses œuvres dépeignent la misère et le mal de notre monde contemporain.

En se servant de la laideur, son arme de prédilection, il bouscule le spectateur et l’oblige à réagir et à prendre position. Cet univers intemporel et cauchemardesque, instinctuel et primitif, qu'il rend à forts traits, déborde de violence et de sexualité et évoque sans compromission ce côté sombre de notre histoire et de notre inconscient.

Bien que professeur mathématique pendant plus de 30 ans, sa pratique artistique a occupé une place majeure tout au long son existence. Décédé en janvier 2017 des suites d’une longue maladie, Daniel Erban nous a laissé une œuvre brute, crue et vraie, véritable témoignage brûlant d’humanité.

Born in Israel (1951_Montréal 2017), Daniel Erban arrived in Canada at a very young age and began his artistic work in the early 1970s. Crafted with a clean and incisive gesture, straightforward and raw, his works depict the misery and evil of the world we live in.

With all gloves off, he jostles the viewer around, forcing him to react and take a stand. This timeless and nightmarish, instinctual and primitive universe, which he renders in strong lines, overflows with violence and sexuality and evokes without compromise the darker side of our history and our unconscious.

Although a math teacher for more than 30 years, his artistic practice occupied a major place throughout his existence and was his ‘raison d’être’.
